The big picture does not bode well for making it to the playoffs. In the East, there are currently teams such as the Hurricanes, Devils, Lightning, and Penguins outside the playoff positions. Compared to those teams, the Sabres are clear underdogs when it comes to spring’s race to the playoffs.
Still, there is some latent potential in Buffalo. The team’s best forward Tage Thompson has just returned to the lineup and has yet to show his best skills. Of the other core players, Dylan Cozens can also deliver more than the .5 PPG he has so far. The Sabres will be getting more help from their IR soon as Alex Tuch recovers. However, the sniper will be sidelined for this game.
Surprising successes in the desert
In Arizona, the situation is significantly better for the spring. The Coyotes have 28 points after 26 games, which is currently enough for the final playoff spot in the conference. Behind them, however, are the Minnesota Wild and both teams from Alberta. It will be difficult for the Coyotes to keep their current position in the spring.
The Coyotes have seen some surprising names as driving forces. With 12 goals, Lawson Crouse has already scored half of his total from last season. Michael Carcone, who dominated the AHL last season, has 13 goals to his name. Connor Ingram, on the other hand, has a .920 SV% and has emerged as the No. 1 choice over Karel Vejmelka.
Buffalo in regulation
Despite the teams’ current standings, Buffalo is higher than Arizona in my rankings due to their better offense. In terms of odds, the situation is different. Unibet has the Sabres at +120 to win in regular time.
