Saturday’s afternoon game against Dallas was a complete letdown for Tampa. Dallas had a three-goal lead on the board after just eight minutes. Eventually, the Stars hammered an ugly score of 8-1 to finish a nightmare evening for Lightning. Andrei Vasilevskiy has not looked like himself since returning from injury. Vasilevskiy has a .859 SV percentage after four games and -3.75 goals saved above expected. Tampa’s No. 1 goalie must soon find his game, otherwise the Lightning will be in big trouble.

Top players mean everything to this team. On Nikita Kucherov’s best nights, it may seem like Tampa is still the powerhouse it was in the beginning of the decade. However, those four-line deep championship teams are now just a faint memory. Even the second line is remarkably worse than the top line. Neither Anthony Cirelli nor Michael Eyssimont should play such a big role, but that’s what lack of depth does to your lineup.
Stars have a different profile
There are no significant threats in the Dallas Stars’ situation. They have one of the best rosters in the league mixed with solid goaltending. While Tampa has four names in the top 30 in the scoring charts, only Joe Pavelski makes that same group from the Stars. Still, Dallas’ goals for per game (3.55) is better than Tampa’s (3.32). The statistics tell you everything you need to know about the completely different profiles of these two teams.
Today’s game has some kind of extra charge after Saturday’s blowout. The Lightning are likely to come into the game energetic and motivated by Saturday’s loss. There are hardly any worries about Dallas succumbing to arrogance, despite the events of the last game. Tampa’s home arena is still a place with no easy points up for grabs with half-hearted performances.
Let’s continue on the Dallas bandwagon
At the time of writing, the betting market sees the match as a coinflip. Personally, I see Dallas as the favorite expecting to win about 55 times out of a hundred. The visitors’ game plan starts with shutting down Tampa’s excellent top line. If the Stars manage to keep Kucherov’s line off the scoresheet, Tampa will have very few other threats to challenge the visitors.
