Rising prospects in Columbus
The Columbus Blue Jackets opened their winning column over the weekend with a 5-3 win against the New York Rangers. In many ways, the game left a positive taste for the home team. Captain Boone Jenner scored a hat trick and defenseman David Jiricek scored his first career NHL goal. There was some negative news as well, when the team’s best defenseman Zach Werenski was announced to miss at least a week with injury.

The Blue Jackets are an interesting team to watch this season. In addition to Jiricek, forward Adam Fantilli also represents the top of his draft class and could already play a big role this season. He will be given a fair chance to showcase his talent, given that the Columbus offense ranks among the lowest quarter in the league. Moving Patrik Laine to the top-center role is an interesting move from the coaching staff, the effects of which should be closely monitored in the early part of the season.
New acquisitions bring it on
Detroit also got its first win over the weekend as Tampa fell 6-4 in Saturday’s high-scoring game. Of the summer acquisitions, Alex DeBrincat enjoyed a three-point game and J.T. Compher got a goal and a helper. Getting offense from more than just Dylan Larkin is essential for a team that struggled throughout last season with scoring.
First-choice goalie Ville Husso played both games last week, and Detroit has a busy four-game week ahead. At this point, there is a somewhat high probability of backup James Reimer getting the nod, especially since the week’s upcoming opponents (Pittsburgh, Ottawa, Calgary) are all tougher teams to beat than Columbus.
Juicy odds for unders
The Red Wings are clearly the better team, but their goalie choice may even things out substantially. Reimer’s potential start would increase not only the home team’s chances but also the games’ expected goals. Still, I don’t expect a particularly high-scoring game, as Detroit is a reasonably good team defensively and neither team has enough offensive firepower to reach the NHL average.
